On April 17th EMT's were across the street on another call and discovered The Mansion Apartments on the 200 block of W. Branch Ave. in a blaze. As 8401 arrived he struck the second alarm. The fire started in the 1st floor corner apt. because a man was smoking a cigarette next to is O2 tank that had a leak. With the fire being oxygen feed it quickly spread and engulfed the whole room in minutes and spread to the apt. above with a resident who also had O2 tanks. Within minutes trucks were arriving but struggled to get water on the fire, because the closest hydrant was about half a mile down the road, and another hydrant was about a half mile the other way but it was on the same maine so if one hydrant was on the other was weak. This delayed the firefighters attack. Lindenwold's Squad 63 was dispatched as RIC, which stands for Rapid Intervention Company, which is the company that goes in to get a down firefighter. I was on Squad 63 that day but I can not go inside, so I was on the exterior helping y crew throw ladders, hump hose, and do a 360 to make sure things are "safe". After a few hours of fighting the blaze Squad 63 was released as RIC and was put inside to look for hot spots and do a primary search for an unaccounted for person. During the search we found 3 cats, 2 of them near death. I quickly ran them to the EMTs where they were put on oxygen and made it. |
