Asst. Captain Mark Bezos talks about is 1st fire as a volunteer firefighter. He was the second person on the scene meaning there was a pretty good chance he could go inside the fire. He went up to the Captain in command and saw him talking to the first volunteer on scene instructing him to go inside to save the homeowner's dog. Mark was of course upset that he doesn't have to glory of being able to go save a living thing out of a fire, but he gets over it. The captain then gives Mark his assignment which was to go inside up the stairs, past the fire into the master bedroom to get the homeowner a pair of shoes. On his way out he meet the other firefighter at the door with the dog in hand, and they both approached the homeowner at the same time, and she of course gave more attention to the dog than the shoes. A few days later the homeowner sent a letter to the department to thank the firefighter for their effort in saving her house, with one thing listed above all else thanking the firefighter who brought her out a pair of shoes. After he finished his story he explained how it's not important to get all the glory, that the little things are just as important as the big things. You don't have to save a life to be a hero, you can just simply help at a soup kitchen or help out a neighbor, no matter what you'll always be someones hero.
This article is all about how the government put a stop to all forest fire, including ones that are naturally occurring. Stopping all forest fires actually hurts the forest more than helps it,fire is a way for the forest to give itself like a reset, to get rid of all the dead vegetation so new can grow. Now the forestry service has been allowed to start doing controlled burns again. When they do controlled burns they make sure there are no fir trees in the path of the fire due to the fact that they burn rapidly and wildly, making it difficult to control the fire. |
